Safe Water for Life

BioSand Water Filters

The BioSand Water Filter is an innovative technology which makes use of a slow sand filtration process. This is a simple and effective method of providing safe water to people in remote areas all over the world.

The average cost of placing a BioSand Water Filter in the home of a family is £40. This covers the raw materials, construction, transportation, supervision, training for the family in filter maintenance and community health training, as well as follow-up, monitoring and evaluation.

Samaritan's Purse teams and local partners together construct and install the water filters into homes and communities, schools and clinics.

Safe water for families in Mozambique
Thousands of people in Mozambique now have a lifetime's access to clean, safe, drinking water, thanks the 'Bio-Sand Water Filter Units' , developed by the Canadian office of SPI.

Using natural methods of water filtration through layers of sand, these units are a proven, natural and cost effective method of providing a lifetime of clear drinking water to families who otherwise have access to only polluted water.

In 2005, 1081 filters have been distributed in Mozambique. Since the start of the project in 2001, 23,438 people have received access to safe drinking water.

The Bio-Sand Water Filter costs £40 per unit. Each of the concrete moulded units have been made in Mozambique itself, giving badly needed local employment. After each unit was delivered to the family or group of families, Samaritan's Purse made sure they had full training on how to use the unit, which has no moving parts and needs no servicing. These units can last a lifetime. Polluted water is poured in the top - and drinking water comes out the bottom!

Already in use in 25 countires, these 'Bio-sand' filters are providing life-giving clean water to families whose lives would otherwise be ruined by disease-ridden, polluted water.

What you can do

For £40.00 you can provide a filter to help families in Africa, who otherwise would be affected by disease-ridden, polluted water for the rest of their lives.

If you prefer to save up the £40 over a period of time, why not use an empty plastic water bottle? Print and cut out the label and fill the bottle with coins towards this project.
