Child and Family Support
You can’t change the world, but you could make
the world of difference to a struggling family in Romania or
the
Crimea.
WHY SHOULD WE HELP?
There are so many suffering children in the world today.
When we support a family it:
- Keeps the family together
- Keeps the children out of orphanages
- Enables the children to attend school
- Brings improvement to their health and housing
- Provides added income so they can rise out of poverty
- Gives a tangible expression of God’s love through Jesus Christ to a desperate
family
The aim is to help a family in great need to get on their feet and eventually
be able to support themselves. It is a joy to read reports telling us of those
who are able to support themselves and be a fully functioning family again. |

WHAT IS CHILD AND FAMILY SUPPORT?
Samaritan’s Purse has been working in Romania since 1990 and has recently
started to support families in the Crimea.
Romania
We have built up a strong relationship with a Romanian charity called Ecce Homo
(Behold the Man). Ecce Homo identifies the families in need of support and then
a social worker visits each family to assess what resources are required and
to ensure that the money is used for the good of the whole family.
Crimea
We have found children living in appalling conditions in the Crimea and are working
there with an organisation called The Kind Samaritan. They provide food, clothing
and shelter for families in poverty, including single mothers and families with
disabled children

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Support a Family
For as little as £15 per month you could bring much needed assistance to a family in Romania or the Crimea. Can you spare £15 a month to help lift a family out of poverty?
Emergency Fund
Desperate mothers have been bringing their babies to Ecce Homo, asking for help. A fund has been set up to support these families until a sponsor can be found. With this fund available, Ecce Homo will not have to turn away the mothers and their babies, whose next stop for the babies would be the orphanage. Can you spare £5 per month to save a child from the orphanage? |

A Typical Family
The Vuchinger family live in Timisoara. Claudia, the mother has never worked, she is 29 and had only a basic education. Her husband Remus, is 31 and has a heart condition so can no longer work. Rebeca is 2. Melanie is 3 and David is 5 - none of them attend school. Biaana is 7 and he attends primary school.
Their only income is £20.45 children's allowance. The family lives in what is described as 'a wagon' in very poor conditions. Inside it is very often cold, because the walls are not sufficiently thick to face the weather conditions and when it rains, water comes in. The children are sick most of the time because of the damp conditions. The only source of heat is from firewood. but the wagon is still cold. This winter however, the family does not even have any firewood and the parents are worried about the future.
Ilona Varjasi
Social worker, Claudia Mogos was walking through her home town of Simleu on a Friday which is market day. It was very hot and crowded. Claudia suddenly felt that someone was grabbing her arm. It was an old lady, stoopin, pale and out of breath and asking for support for a few minutes as she was feeling ill because of the heat.
Her name is IlonaVarjasi and she is 88 years old. She has a severe stoop which means that she looks at her feet almost all the time. She wears old but very clean clothes and the pair of shoes, which she wears on her swollen feet, were bought in 1955. She has grey hair, and eyes which are serene and bright, they seem to be smiling all the time.
Claudia was concerned for the lady and found out whre she lived. Her home is just a kitchen and only one other room. It is very damp, cold and is in desperate need of redecoration. She has to get her water from a neighbour 4 houses away. She has spine and eye problems, but cannot afford medication. She is totally alone in the world as she is a widow and has no children. She has a low income of £18.00 per month. She is now on the Child & Family Support scheme which will provide her with firewood for the winter, a stove to keep her warm and help with medical bills for her failing eyesight. She also has a companion in Claudia who will now visit Ilona regularly to help make her lonely old age just a little brighter. |
