Hurricane Katrina 2005
Millions of people were evacuated from their homes as Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast . Residents of Louisiana , Mississippi , and Alabama were hardest hit, and some areas were inaccessible for weeks.
Samaritan's Purse helped respond to this disaster by sending four Disaster Relief Units to these devastated areas, starting in Alabama.
Samaritan's Purse also mobilised hundreds of volunteer relief workers to help repair as many homes as possible. These volunteer teams cleared debris and fallen trees, repaired roofs, pumped water from homes, and tore out drywall. Generators were also set up by the teams to provide electricity for the sick and elderly.
Disaster Relief Units and Teams worked in partnership with local churches to ensure that spiritual needs were met too. Relief volunteers were available to pray with residents and share the love and hope found in Jesus Christ.
