The UN estimate that 11 million people across Eastern Africa are in desperate need of food and water right now.

The failure of the short-season rains left large sections of East Africa in severe drought. The drought has resulted in failed crops, pasture degradation, water and food shortages. Although there have been some rains in recent weeks, often these have resulted in isolated floods, making the situation even worse. The rains have not been sufficient to ensure future harvests.

Poverty is intensifying in this ongoing situation as the drought and famine worsen. Nomads, who rely on animals as a means of wealth as well as a source of food, have been left destitute as thousands of animals have already succumbed to hunger. Children are among the most affected, weakening quickly and dying through malnutrition and commonplace infections like measles and diarrhoea.

Samaritan's Purse has teams already established right across this region who are working hard to prevent further suffering.

In Kenya Samaritan's Purse is transporting food, supplies and medicine to the victims of this looming catastrophe.

Samaritan's Purse is already feeding more than 400,000 people in 23 camps for Internally Displaced People in Northern Uganda .

In Southern Sudan Samaritan's Purse is undertaking long term agricultural programmes and in Western Sudan, around the Darfur region, a new water supply and sanitation programme is bringing relief to drought victims through new well construction and maintenance of non-functional water supply schemes.

We desperately need your help now to alleviate this suffering, and to help us prepare the people of East Africa to better survive future droughts and famines.

Please stand with us by praying and giving towards Samaritan's Purse drought-related projects right across Eastern Africa , as we seek to reach out to people in the name of Jesus.
